I'm so sorry to hear today that the Aarhus Gallery in Belfast, Maine is closing. From the moment I walked in there six years ago, I felt instant chemistry: I loved the work and direction. That chemistry led to a conversation with one of its owners that led to an invitation to exhibit there. Aarhus exhibited my "Diaries" in its Artist Books invitational show and other mixed media pieces in Extravaganza that year. (The Maine book show included work by the great book artist Peter Madden and others.) Although I was not exactly a Maine book artist, Aarhus pushed the limits for me. (I went to Acadia almost every year. And my "Diaries" series became books.) Being open is the norm there….they show exceptional work, highlight unusual themes and mediums, and often host music, poetry, film and other arts events. Like artists, galleries are challenged by staying afloat in a time/society that doesn't adequately support the arts. What a wonderful gallery it was, and now we've lost it. (Note: Aarhus will close after its 8th Annual Extravaganza on exhibit from November 7 to December 24, 2014.) |
Three of my mixed media pieces were exhibited at the 12x12 Holiday Show at the Bromfield Gallery, Harrison Ave., Boston SoWa from December 4 - 22. Opening reception for the juried show of small work was on December 6 – in conjunction with SoWa's festive First Friday of gallery and studio openings.
